Moissanite Earrings Review and Giveaway

Must-have fashion lists generally irk me, but one item I believe that nearly all women should own is a pair of clear, sparkly studs. For years I've specified diamond or cubic zirconia studs, but now I'm DEFINITELY adding Moissanite to the list.

Moissanite is named for the man who discovered a mineral called silicon carbide, Dr. Henri Moissan, a French Nobel Prize recipient in chemistry. Silicon carbide itself is very rare in its natural form and too scarce in nature to be mined, but Charles & Colvard - makers of Moissanite - own a patented process for creating the jewel in a way that recreates the characteristics of the original mineral. The company says that Moissanite stones have more fire and brilliance than diamonds, but they're considerably cheaper to produce since raw materials don't have to be mined from the earth.

I'll admit that I don't own many diamonds and the ones I have are teeny and difficult to examine for brilliance. But I'll tell you what I do know. I was sent a pair of 0.5 carat Moissanite studs to review* -similar to these - and I am beyond impressed.

I have a pair of CZ studs in my jewelry box that are the exact size and shape of these new ones. I've been wearing the Moissanite ones quite a bit since they arrived and was looking for them over the weekend and grabbed the CZ ones instead. I knew IMMEDIATELY they were the wrong studs. The difference in sparkle, color, and glow is absolutely astonishing. The Moissanite earrings are simply gorgeous and have become my new stud staple.

I've got an identical pair of studs in my possession, courtesy Charles & Colvard, that I'll give away to a lucky Already Pretty reader! Here's what you've got to do to enter:

  1. Visit the Charles & Colvard website to learn more about their products.
  2. Leave a comment on this post telling us why you'd love to win these gorgeous Moissanite studs, and A VALID E-MAIL. Comments without a valid e-mail in the comment will be disqualified.
  3. Cross your fingers!

Enter by midnight CST on Sunday, December 11, 2011. I'll draw a winner at random the following day. This giveaway is open to everyone, including international readers. Good luck!

I'd love to win these earrings because I do wear studs a lot, but I feel my cheap CZ earrings are dull and kind of get lost behind my hair.

I'd love to win the moissanite earrings because I really want to see the brilliance of the stone. Whenever my boyfriend decides he's ready to get engaged I would really love to consider moissanite. Getting these earrings will help me make my decision!!! I already know I don't want a diamond and I've heard moissanite is a great stone. I would love to see for myself.

I'd love an alternative to the diamond studs I own. The earrings were a gift from my father on my 13th birthday, and I rarely wear them (despite the fact that they go with everything and I've owned them for 10 years!) because I'm paranoid about loosing one. A pair of studs that's affordable and just as beautiful would be wonderful.

Oh, these are pretty! Okay, so, my reasons are pretty similar to everyone else's, but with the added tidbit that every time I hear the word "Moissanite" I think of the movie Snatch. And isn't that a good enough reason?

I would love these! I was excited to learn that I could get a set of, for example, 1 CT moissanite studs for a quarter of the cost of the cheapest diamonds. (I've dreamed of big studs like that for a while, but since both my husband and I are in grad school, diamonds aren't exactly in our price range.) Even better, moissanite is socially responsible, which I love.

A classic, quality pair of clear crystal/CZ/diamond studs have been at the top of my wishlist for a while now. I continue to buy packs of cheapie ones because of the low price, since I find myself having to replace them regularly. I was crossing my fingers for fancy studs from my lovely boyfriend for Christmas this year, but instead I am getting a fancy single-cup coffee maker. So winning these Moissanite beauties would be such a treat!

I'd love these because I'm getting my ears repierced and I need a classic pair of earrings like those on the site.

I wear CZ studs everyday, but have been considering replacing them with moissanite studs for quite some time. I'd rather not support diamond mining (especially since it can be difficult to tell if they are conflict-free), and moissanite is a great option.

I'd love to win these because they're a wardrobe staple I'm sadly lacking. I agree, moissanite is way better than CZ, so having a pair would be fabulous.

I'd love to win these studs because the ones I'm wearing now are from Claire's, and would LOSE any sparkly contest they were in.

I confess to not owning a pair of sparkly studs.... CZ, diamond, or otherwise.

I've been eying moissanite for a while. I'd LOVE to win these, because the only sparkly studs I have are made of glass.

I have no sparkly studs and have always thought Moissanite is so cool. These would be excellent.

I would love to win these earrings because I only wear stud earrings. They would really spruce up my SAHM wardrobe.

Interesting... I'd love to see them. My husband wears CZ and I bet he'd love these. Me? I'm partial to those bracelets .

I think lab and man-made gems are the way to go, knowing what we know now about the human and environmental cost of mining!

I would love to win these to be able to switch up my other studs in my three sets of holes.

I don't wear or own very many dangly earrings, so these would be perfect to class up holiday outfits without going full-length sparkle.

Most of the time I am rushing out the door, so my studs remain in my ears 90% of the time. I have read about Moissanite before and would love to win this pair!

Lucky you are picking at random, what a difficult choice otherwise!

I would be so excited if I won these as I am about to make the change from shoulder length hair to a new (as yet unknown) short hairstyle. My soon-to-be classic, but "oh so me" hairstyle would look gorgeous with a pair of beautiful sparkly Moissanite earrings.

Reading your blog has really helped to improve my sense of worth and continued to encourage my journey to loving myself as I am. I can love myself even as I change and grow - what freedom.

Onward and upward. :D

I'm hugely anti-diamond (such a terrible industry) and am always in search of alternatives - this sounds like a lovely option! I'd love to win these as I don't really have a pair of basic, sparkly stud earrings, and they would be very versatile!
